President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Finnish government for the arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa, emphasizing that his administration will not tolerate divisive actions or statements that threaten Nigeria’s unity.

Tinubu made this statement during a meeting at the State House in Abuja, where he received the Letters of Credence from Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, on Friday.

Tinubu Commends Finland’s Swift Action

President Tinubu acknowledged Finland’s efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s integrity and addressing actions that could disrupt peace. He expressed gratitude for their intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.

“I must thank you for your record on safeguarding human rights in our country with the trial of Simon Ekpa,” Tinubu said. “Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism.”

He added, “Our watchword is stability and cohesion to move the country forward. The rule of law safeguards our democratic credentials, morals, and values. We must respect the rule of law.”

Ambassador Sanna Selin praised President Tinubu for his leadership and courage in implementing reforms aimed at fostering economic growth and prosperity. She acknowledged that Simon Ekpa’s activities had hindered bilateral relations in the past but noted that the situation has improved.

“The cooperation between our two countries is going very well now, and the National Security Adviser has been providing all the evidence,” the Ambassador remarked.

Focus on Development and Reforms

President Tinubu discussed Finland’s priorities in Nigeria, including information and communication technology (ICT), agriculture, and education, emphasizing their potential to accelerate the nation’s development.

“Nigeria is undergoing a series of necessary reforms to stimulate growth and prosperity,” Tinubu stated. “Thank you also for the humanitarian support in the North East. I believe that we can work together.”

The President assured Finland of Nigeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation in various sectors and highlighted the importance of reforms to boost economic stability.

Strengthening EU-Nigeria Relations

During the same event, Tinubu received Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of the European Union (EU), Mr. Gautier Mignot, and the Ambassador of Algeria, Mr. Hocine Mezoued.

Tinubu praised the EU for being one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners and urged for stronger ties and increased trade volumes. “Nigeria needs support in digitalizing and automating operations and processes for rendering services,” he said.

He further emphasized Nigeria’s economic potential, particularly with its vibrant and youthful population, which could attract investments.

A Message of Unity and Progress

President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to fostering unity, cooperation, and stability across Nigeria, emphasizing that the rule of law and mutual collaboration are essential to achieving lasting development.

“We need cohesion and cooperation to bring about development,” he said. “Stability and cohesion will move the country forward.”

With Finland’s strengthened cooperation and the EU’s support, Nigeria aims to tackle challenges, stimulate growth, and solidify its position on the global stage.
