The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Adewunmi Onanuga, the member representing Ikene/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Onanuga, affectionately known as “Ijaya,” passed away at the age of 59 in a United Kingdom hospital following a brief illness.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abeokuta, the APC’s State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, described her death as a “rude shock” and a significant loss to the party and the people she represented. “While alive, Onanuga, popularly called ‘Ijaya,’ exuded humility, loyalty, and responsibility to the party and her constituents,” Oladunjoye said.
The lawmaker’s passing was first announced on Wednesday night through a post on the official X account of the House of Representatives. Onanuga served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, a role in which she demonstrated unwavering dedication to her duties.

Governor Dapo Abiodun and other party leaders have been commiserated following the loss. Oladunjoye emphasized Onanuga’s significant contributions to the APC, stating that she remained a “staunch and vibrant party loyalist till her death.”
“She was a commendable and recommendable politician that served as a beacon of hope, not only to female party members but also to the entirety of the party. She was a good ambassador who represented not only her federal constituency but Ogun State as a whole,” Oladunjoye added.
Fondly remembered for her humility and commitment, Onanuga’s political career was marked by her efforts to bring progress to her constituency and serve as a role model for women in politics. “Her legacy as a loyal and vibrant representative will remain an inspiration to many,” Oladunjoye said.
The APC concluded its statement with prayers for the late lawmaker’s family and associates. “We pray that God will grant her family and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the party said.
Onanuga’s death leaves a void in the political and social fabric of Ogun State. Her constituents and party members will undoubtedly feel the impact of her absence for years to come.
