President Joe Biden will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, to Lionel Messi, Magic Johnson, and 17 other influential figures in a ceremony at the White House on Saturday.
The White House announced that the recipients were chosen for their “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”
Lionel Messi: A Global Soccer Icon
Lionel Messi, 37, widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, will be honored for his extraordinary contributions to sports and philanthropy. The Argentine superstar has achieved unparalleled success in his career, winning eight Ballon d’Or awards and being named FIFA’s best player in the world eight times.
Messi is also the most decorated player in professional soccer history, with 45 team trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles, two Copa Americas, and the crowning achievement of his career: the 2022 FIFA World Cup victory with Argentina.
In his first full season with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), Messi made an instant impact, earning the 2024 league MVP title. He scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists in just 19 matches, leading his team to a record-breaking 74-point season.
Off the field, Messi has dedicated himself to charitable work, particularly for children. Through the Leo Messi Foundation, he supports healthcare and education programs for children worldwide. Messi also serves as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, using his global influence to make a difference.
Magic Johnson: Basketball Legend and Community Advocate
Earvin “Magic” Johnson, 65, will also receive the prestigious award. Known as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Johnson had an illustrious career as a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers. His incredible skill as a point guard earned him recognition as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 and inclusion in the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Johnson’s impact extended beyond the court. After retiring in 1991 following his HIV diagnosis, he became a leading advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness. Through his Magic Johnson Foundation, he has also supported underserved communities by providing resources for education and health.
