Ukrainian heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has once again defeated Britain’s Tyson Fury in a rematch held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, retaining his unified world heavyweight titles. The highly anticipated fight, billed as “Fury vs Usyk 2,” ended with a unanimous decision in favor of Usyk, solidifying his undefeated record and delivering another blow to Fury’s career.
In the thrilling rematch at the Kingdom Arena, all three judges scored the fight 116-112 in favor of the 37-year-old Ukrainian champion. This victory mirrors their first encounter on May 18 at the same venue, where Usyk emerged victorious in a split decision. Tyson Fury, 36, suffered his only two career defeats at the hands of Usyk, marking a significant chapter in both boxers’ careers.
Speaking after the match, Usyk praised his opponent, saying, “He (Fury) is a great fighter and a great opponent. An unbelievable 24 rounds for my career.”
The bout was initially scheduled for February but was delayed due to an injury Fury sustained earlier in the year. Despite the challenges, Usyk proved once again why he is regarded as one of the best in the sport.
Zelensky Applauds Usyk’s Triumph
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated Usyk’s victory, calling it a moment of pride and resilience for Ukraine during challenging times. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky wrote, “Victory! So important and so needed by all of us right now.”
He added, “By defending his championship belt, Oleksandr @usykaa proves: we are Ukrainians and we will not give up what is ours! No matter how hard it gets – we will overcome everything. Whether it is in the ring, on the battlefield or in the diplomatic arena – we will fight and we will not give up what is ours!”
The Ukrainian leader concluded his message with patriotic fervor, saying, “Congratulations on your victory, Cossack! Congratulations on your victory, Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!”
Usyk’s win has been celebrated not just as a sporting triumph but as a symbol of Ukrainian resilience. Amid ongoing challenges faced by the nation, including war and diplomatic struggles, Usyk’s performance in the ring has served as a beacon of hope and determination for his compatriots.
