In a bid to ease travel costs for Nigerians during the festive season, the Federal Government has reduced interstate transport fares by 50%. This move is aimed at helping citizens afford trips to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their loved ones.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Transportation, Olujimi Oyetomi. “To commence the 2024 Yuletide road transportation, passengers will board buses to their destinations for only 50% of fares, as declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Oyetomi stated in an official press release.
The fare reduction is part of President Tinubu’s initiative to provide transportation palliatives to Nigerians, ensuring that travel expenses do not hinder festive celebrations.
During the signing ceremony for the initiative, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Adeleye Adeoye. The event also brought together key stakeholders in the transportation sector, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Association of Luxurious Bus Owners of Nigeria, and God is Good Motors.
As part of the arrangement, travelers departing from major cities like Abuja and Lagos (Oshodi) to various destinations nationwide will enjoy the 50% fare reduction.

This measure has been widely welcomed as a timely relief. Speaking on the development, a representative of one of the partnering transport companies remarked, “This partnership shows the government’s commitment to making life easier for Nigerians, especially during this festive period.”
With the Yuletide season fast approaching, many Nigerians are expected to take advantage of this significant discount. The initiative reflects the government’s broader effort to support citizens amid economic challenges, particularly during a season known for family reunions and celebrations.
Passengers are advised to book their tickets early to secure seats and enjoy the reduced fares, which will remain in effect throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
