The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a landmark project by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, has expanded its export reach, supplying Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to several African countries, including Cameroon, Angola, Ghana, and South Africa, in recent weeks. The refinery’s products, which meet international standards, are also making waves in global markets, with diesel and jet fuel being exported to Europe.
Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, revealed this during a visit from a Japanese business delegation led by Japan’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo. Speaking about the refinery’s global impact, Edwin stated, “Our products are already making their mark internationally. Diesel has gone all over the world, and jet fuel is being heavily exported to European markets.”
A Nigerian Vision with Global Reach
Edwin emphasized that the refinery represents a Nigerian success story. “This facility is the vision of a Nigerian investor, designed and built by Nigerians, and intended to serve the global market,” he said. The Dangote Refinery is celebrated as the world’s largest single-train refinery complex, a feat achieved using cutting-edge technology and engineering expertise provided by Dangote Industries Limited itself.
He further noted that the refinery, alongside its petrochemical and fertiliser plants, incorporates advanced Japanese equipment, showcasing the role of international collaboration in the project. Edwin said, “We always seek the latest technology in any business we engage in. With Japan’s focus on technological innovation, there is ample scope for cooperation.”
Driving Economic Growth
The Dangote Refinery is expected to transform Nigeria’s economy by significantly boosting downstream investments, creating jobs, increasing tax revenues, and reducing the country’s reliance on imported refined products. Edwin highlighted that leveraging Africa’s crude oil resources to produce refined products locally would create a “virtuous cycle of industrial development, job creation, and economic prosperity.”
Additionally, the refinery is expanding its polypropylene section, aiming to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported polypropylene, a key material in packaging, textiles, and automotive manufacturing.

Japanese Delegation Impressed
The visiting Japanese delegation expressed admiration for the scale and sophistication of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals complex. Suzuki Hideo, Japan’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, described the facility as an “astonishing masterpiece” that showcases Nigeria’s technological advancements.
Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organisation, praised the refinery as a symbol of Nigeria’s leadership in Africa. “This remarkable project demonstrates that Nigeria’s population is not only growing but also advancing in technology. We are keen to collaborate with Nigerian companies, especially Dangote Refinery,” Oku said.
Similarly, Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, called the refinery a “miracle” and one of the world’s wonders. Reflecting on its significance, he said, “I’ve seen many standalone refineries across the globe, but the size of a refinery built by one single investor is probably a miracle in the world.”
The delegation, which toured the refinery, petrochemical plant, and fertiliser facilities, noted that the Dangote Refinery reinforces Nigeria’s position as Africa’s gateway to the global market. Oku added, “This facility serves as an ideal introduction to Nigeria for the global community.”
Looking Ahead
The Dangote Refinery continues to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leader in industrial development and energy production. As Edwin concluded, “Our goal is to create substantial value for Nigeria and contribute to the country’s GDP while maintaining the highest standards of quality and innovation.”
With its expanding global footprint and commitment to excellence, the Dangote Refinery is not only transforming Nigeria’s economy but also showcasing its potential on the international stage.
