The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered a cache of weapons during a routine patrol along the Zaria-Jos Road in Kaduna. The suspects, identified as 40-year-old Zubairu Musa and 17-year-old Nasiru Saidu, are both natives of Kankara Local Government Area in Katsina State.
The arrest was made by officers from the 47 Police Mobile Force Squadron, Zaria, on Thursday, December 5, 2024, following credible intelligence about illegal arms trafficking in the area.
Police spokesman ASP Mansir Hassan, in a statement on Friday, disclosed that the suspects were caught with a bag containing eight locally made pump-action guns, one locally made pistol, and 65 live cartridges.
“The officers acted promptly on intelligence about the movement of illegal arms and intercepted the suspects during a vehicular patrol,” Hassan said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo was actively involved in the illegal trafficking of firearms, raising concerns about the potential use of these weapons for criminal activities.
The suspects are reportedly cooperating with investigators to uncover the full extent of the gun-running network and identify their accomplices.
“The suspects are assisting the police in efforts to dismantle this dangerous network operating within the state and beyond,” the police spokesman added.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Abdullahi praised the officers for their swift action and vigilance. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
“The proactive measures taken by our officers demonstrate our resolve to combat illegal arms trafficking and ensure the safety of our communities,” Abdullahi said.
