Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Reports to EFCC Over Alleged Fund Misappropriation

Yahaya Bello

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has again appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer allegations of misappropriating public funds. Bello, who arrived at the EFCC office in Abuja on Tuesday morning, was accompanied by his legal team.

Bello’s visit comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the EFCC’s authority to investigate corruption cases. The former governor’s appearance followed speculations last week about his intention to honor the EFCC’s invitation, though his media aides did not confirm the rumors.

Driving himself in a black Hilux vehicle, Bello presented himself to the anti-graft agency as investigations into his alleged financial misconduct continue.

The case against Bello is currently before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja. During a hearing on November 14, the EFCC requested an adjournment, citing the need for more time within the 30-day summons period for Bello to appear.

While the EFCC granted administrative bail to Bello’s co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, it sought an extension to secure Bello’s presence in court. The trial judge granted the request, adjourning the case to November 27 for Bello’s arraignment.

The EFCC’s fresh charges against Bello are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities during his tenure as governor of Kogi State. Specific details of the charges have not been disclosed, but the case has drawn significant public and legal attention.

Bello’s appearance at the EFCC marks a critical step in addressing the allegations. As the arraignment date approaches, observers are closely monitoring the proceedings, which could have broader implications for governance and accountability in Nigeria.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring due process in its investigations, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.
