Police officers from the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested three suspects for allegedly stealing phones from victims of a car accident on Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja. The suspects, identified as Isaiah Adegbenro, 38, Edet Johnson, 30, and Efe Sowemimo, 28, were caught trying to escape with the stolen phones just a short distance from the accident site.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest and provided details of the incident. According to him, the victims were traveling in a red 2010 Toyota Camry when the driver lost control and crashed into a road divider near the Adeyemi Bero end of Governor’s Road in Alausa, Ikeja.

“The three suspects were nearby when the accident occurred,” Hundeyin explained. “Instead of helping the driver and passengers out of the badly damaged car, they took advantage of the situation by searching through the victims’ pockets and the vehicle.”

The stolen items included an iPhone 15, valued at approximately N1.3 million, and an iPhone 12 worth N620,000. The police spokesperson described how the RRS operatives, who were patrolling the area, were alerted to the suspects’ actions and quickly gave chase. “They apprehended the suspects and recovered both phones from their pockets,” he added.

The police also ensured that the accident victims received medical attention and removed the damaged vehicle from the road to clear any obstruction. “Our operatives prioritized helping the victims after securing the stolen items,” Hundeyin stated.

The suspects reportedly confessed to the crime during questioning and are expected to appear in court today, following the directives of the RRS Commander, CSP Shola Jejeloye. “Justice will be served, and we remain committed to maintaining law and order in Lagos,” Hundeyin concluded.
