The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has firmly rejected the Church of England’s recent decision to endorse same-sex marriage, declaring its commitment to upholding Biblical teachings. The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, voiced this stance on Tuesday at the opening of the 2024 Divine Commonwealth Conference (DIVCCON), held in Abuja. The conference, themed ‘Peace, Be Still’, serves as the Church’s annual gathering for spiritual renewal and fellowship.

Speaking to attendees, Ndukuba made clear that, despite differing opinions on the sensitive topic, the Church of Nigeria remains unwavering in its convictions. “The Church of England has strayed from its Christian principles. They have not only voted to endorse same-sex marriage but have also introduced liturgy celebrating this rebellion against God,” he stated.

Ndukuba emphasized that the decision would not alter the cordial relationship between the Church of Nigeria and the Church of England but affirmed the Nigerian church’s determination to adhere strictly to Biblical doctrines. He highlighted recent consultations in the United Kingdom with leaders from the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) and other evangelical and orthodox groups to protect a spiritually faithful environment for their ministries.

“We are committed to GAFCON and to upholding Biblical Orthodoxy,” Ndukuba declared. “On these matters, there is no going back.”

Addressing broader challenges faced by Christians, the Primate reassured attendees that God’s control remains absolute despite the world’s chaos and evil. He urged believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness, emphasizing that trials and difficulties often serve as opportunities for spiritual growth and deepening faith.

The conference also featured remarks from Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), represented by Ven. Dr. Princewill Ireoba, Director of Ecumenism and Interfaith. Okoh praised the Church of Nigeria for organizing the DIVCCON conference and emphasized CAN’s dedication to peace and justice. He urged the Church to be a beacon of Christ’s love amid ongoing political, economic, and social challenges.

“It is in these storms that we are reminded of God’s sovereignty and encouraged to trust in His promises. The Church of Nigeria, through events like DIVCCON, plays a vital role in guiding believers and promoting justice and compassion in society,” he said.
