Thirteen people lost their lives following the collapse of a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, local authorities confirmed. The tragic incident, which occurred at a site located near the boundaries of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, was reported on Tuesday by Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA.
Dr. Riti, speaking to journalists in Jos, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of life. “This is an unfortunate incident; these young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood,” he said. Seven of the victims were identified as residents of Bassa LGA.
The council chairman reflected on the harsh economic conditions that drove the victims to work at the mining site, despite the risks involved. “They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death,” Riti lamented.
Dr. Riti extended his sympathies to the families of the deceased. “I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” he said, calling for prayers and support for those mourning the loss of their relatives.
