Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Takes Legal Action Over Gender Allegations

Algerian boxing champion Imane Khelif, who won Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games, is taking legal action over media reports claiming leaked medical information about her gender. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed Khelif’s legal steps on Wednesday following reports in French media alleging that she has XY chromosomes, typically associated with males.

The controversy erupted during the Paris Games in August when Khelif defeated Italy’s Angela Carini in a quick 46-second bout. Carini, visibly distressed and suffering a serious nose injury, chose to abandon the match. The swift victory not only catapulted Khelif to prominence but also sparked heated debates, drawing comments from high-profile figures such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and author J.K. Rowling.

In response to the growing controversy, the IOC stated, “We understand that Imane Khelif has taken legal action against individuals who commented on her situation during the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and is also preparing a lawsuit in response to the latest reporting.” The IOC added that it would not comment further due to the ongoing legal proceedings and concerns over the authenticity of the leaked documents.

Khelif, 25, has a long-standing record of competing in the women’s category in international boxing events. She represented Algeria at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and has participated in numerous International Boxing Association (IBA) championships and tournaments. The Committee also expressed its disappointment over the negative attention Khelif has faced, stating, “The IOC is saddened by the abuse that Imane Khelif is currently receiving.”
