Nigerian troops have successfully captured Abubakar Bawa Ibrahim, widely known as Habu Dogo, a notorious terrorist leader who has long terrorized Sokoto State and neighboring areas. The operation, led by troops under Operation Fansa Yanma of the 8 Division, took place in Rumji village, located in Illela Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State, an area frequently targeted by insurgents.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the capture in a recent statement. Habu Dogo, who was wanted by security agencies in both Nigeria and Niger Republic, has been a major figure in cross-border terrorist activities, making him one of the top targets on the military’s watchlist. His capture represents a significant blow to the terrorist networks operating across the borders.

Highlighting recent achievements, the military reported that, over the past few months, troops neutralized 187 terrorists, arrested 262 suspects, rescued 147 kidnapped victims, and seized several arms and ammunition from insurgents. This success marks an ongoing effort to reduce violence and restore peace in the region.
Abdulfatai Abdul Karim, a prominent social commentator from Sokoto, praised the military for their persistent efforts.
“The troops of the 8 Division have been doing an outstanding job in recent months,” he stated.
He encouraged the military to share their successes more widely, so affected communities can see the progress being made.
“People in these communities need to know about the victories over these gunmen,” Abdul Karim added.
Illela LGA, part of Sokoto East Senatorial District, has been one of eight areas in the district plagued by insurgent violence. Local residents and leaders have long called for stronger security measures to address the persistent attacks by armed groups. Habu Dogo’s arrest is expected to provide some relief to these communities and disrupt the operations of the terrorist cells that have targeted this region.
