Popular social critic and media influencer Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, was detained by the Nigerian police in Abuja on Wednesday after he responded to a formal invitation from the police.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the detention, sharing that VeryDarkMan, often referred to as VDM, was held after willingly cooperating with police authorities. Adeyanju highlighted his client’s ongoing stance about the Nigerian Police. “Our client, VDM, was detained after honoring the police invitation. He has repeatedly advocated that the Nigerian Police are our friends, despite common perceptions otherwise,” Adeyanju stated.

VeryDarkMan, who frequently shares opinions on social and political issues, is known for his open remarks on law enforcement, often urging Nigerians to engage peacefully with the police. He had previously issued a public apology to the police for wearing a uniform resembling theirs in one of his videos. Following the incident, he advised the public to be cautious about using official-looking attire and urged them to seek permission before wearing anything that may resemble police uniforms or property.
The Vanguard newspaper reported on the apology, where VeryDarkMan encouraged Nigerians to respect the authority of official uniforms and the need to avoid misunderstandings with law enforcement. “I advise everyone to be mindful and seek permission before wearing items that may appear to be official police property,” he had stated.
