In a recent interview, football legend Lionel Messi opened up about his plans after retirement, his legacy, and his goals with Inter Miami, the MLS team he joined this season. While fans may hope to see Messi transition to a coaching role in the future, the Argentine superstar made it clear he has no plans to become a coach.
“I wouldn’t like to be a coach,” Messi said, expressing his intention to live life day-to-day after retiring from playing. “From there, I want to see what happens, to realize how I feel. In football, a lot of things always happen. There’s still a long way to go, so I’m not thinking too much about it. I’m going to live day to day without thinking too much about the future.”
Reflecting on his remarkable career, Messi shared his appreciation for everything he has achieved. “Let people remember me as they want. My biggest dream was to win the World Cup, which I fought for a long time and which cost me a lot of effort,” he said. He added that he feels fortunate to have won numerous titles with Barcelona and the Argentine national team, along with a fulfilling personal life. “I’ve been lucky enough to win everything with Barcelona, with the national team, and to have a wonderful life and family. I am very grateful to God for everything I have been through.”
Messi also discussed his ambitions for Inter Miami, which recently completed the regular season with success. “We were happy and celebrated the achievement because it was something difficult and important,” Messi explained. “We are aware that the real title we want is the MLS. During the year, we had many very silly mistakes that we can avoid, and in these playoffs, they cannot happen because they can cost you elimination.” Confident in the team’s strength, he noted, “I think we are one of the favorites. The other teams also respect us.”
The 36-year-old player praised Inter Miami’s forward-thinking approach, highlighting the club’s commitment to growth. “The club does not set limits; that is the philosophy. This was demonstrated by everything they have done so far,” Messi said. “We have to keep growing in order to be great within the MLS and, why not, within the world.”
