The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that a naval personnel shot and killed his colleague in Zamfara State following an argument. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, October 25, 2024, in Dansadau, Maru Local Government Area.
According to reports, Leading Seaman (LS) Akila, who was deployed as part of Team 3 under Operation Sheto Yanma (formerly known as Operation Hadarin Daji), opened fire on his fellow naval colleague during an undisclosed argument. The incident occurred around 3:12 a.m.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed the situation in a statement, emphasizing that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
“On 25 October 24, at about 03.12hrs, naval personnel, LS Akila, deployed at FOB Dansadau for Operation Fansan Yamma, in questionable circumstances opened fire sporadically, killing a fellow military colleague,” Buba stated.

Following the shooting, LS Akila was quickly apprehended, disarmed, and taken into custody. The Defence Headquarters has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“After investigation, the case will be escalated to a standing court martial set up to address such misdemeanour among troops,” Buba explained.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released, as the military is in the process of notifying the family.
“The administrative procedure for notifying the family of the deceased is ongoing. It is for this reason his name is not yet released to the public. Nevertheless, the name will be released in due course,” Buba added.
The Defence Headquarters has urged the media to exercise sensitivity while reporting on the matter, to avoid causing additional distress to the family of the deceased.
“Accordingly, we urge the media to exercise caution in reporting in order not to further demoralise the family of the deceased, please,” Major General Buba cautioned.
