The Yobe State House of Assembly has scheduled the presentation of the 2025 budget proposal by Governor Mai Mala Buni. The announcement came after the Assembly received a letter from the governor, requesting permission to present the state’s financial plan for the upcoming year.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, read the letter during the opening of a plenary session on Tuesday. This session followed a three-week recess during which Assembly members attended the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Tanzania and engaged in other committee activities.
According to Speaker Mashio, the budget presentation is set for Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the House chambers. He emphasized the importance of the occasion and called on all Assembly members to support the governor during the presentation.
“I urge my fellow members to provide the necessary support and cooperation for the governor’s successful budget presentation,” Mashio stated.

New Appointments for State Boards Under Review
In addition to the budget presentation announcement, the House of Assembly is also considering the confirmation of two new appointments. The executive arm of the state government has nominated Umar Hassan Babayo and Suleiman Abubakar Bakura for key positions. Babayo has been nominated as the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), while Bakura is set for the position of Chairman of the Internal Revenue Service. Both nominations are for a first term of four years.
The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, moved the motion for the confirmation process during the plenary session. He highlighted that the appointments were made in compliance with Section 12 of the State Universal Basic Education Board and Internal Revenue Service Law.
“These nominations align with the legal requirements, and it is now the House’s responsibility to ensure due diligence in the screening process,” Hon. Yusuf remarked.
The Assembly has referred the nominees to its standing committees on Basic Education and Finance and Appropriation for further screening. This step is necessary before the House makes a final decision on their confirmation.
