The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to begin its Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CBWASSCE) for private candidates on Friday, October 25, 2024. This new approach marks a significant shift in how WAEC administers exams, embracing digital technology while offering flexibility to candidates.
According to a statement from WAEC’s spokesperson, Adesina Fadekemi, the computer-based exams will run until December 20, 2024.
Fadekemi explained, “The examination will adopt the hybrid mode of delivering the examination, which implies that the objective or multiple-choice questions would be rendered onscreen, and candidates would be required to give their responses on the screen. The essay and practical questions will also appear on the screen, but candidates will provide their answers using the answer booklets provided.”
This hybrid model aims to balance traditional exam methods with digital technology, providing a smoother transition for candidates who may be new to computer-based testing. Additionally, WAEC has made provisions for those who prefer the conventional method.
“The examination council has also provided an option for candidates who wish to use paper and pen mode for the examination,” Fadekemi added.

WAEC also extended the registration deadline for candidates who wish to participate. Initially scheduled to close earlier, the registration has now been extended until Tuesday, October 29, 2024, to give more candidates the opportunity to enroll.
Furthermore, WAEC emphasized that the ‘Walk-in-Candidate’ option will be available for those who decide to register just 24 hours before a particular paper is scheduled. This feature is designed to accommodate last-minute registrants and ensure that as many candidates as possible can take part in the exams.
