The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended two teenagers accused of stealing over 100 mobile phones and 75 music players from a local phone store. The suspects, both 15 years old, allegedly carried out the theft by taking advantage of the store owner’s absence.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Wakil provided details of the incident in a statement on Friday. According to Wakil, the arrest followed a report from the store owner, who alerted the authorities about the missing items. “Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the ORP team, led by CSP Kim Albert, to investigate,” Wakil said.
The suspects, identified as Hamza Sadiq and Adamu Ahmadu, are students of Bakari Dukku Comprehensive Secondary School. During questioning, the teenagers admitted to acquiring the key to the store, which had been left in a secure location, and timing their theft to coincide with the store owner’s trips to a nearby village market.
The two suspects confessed to repeatedly entering the store during the day to steal mobile phones, music players, and other valuables. “The suspects sold the stolen items randomly at lower prices, ranging from N5,000 to N8,000,” Wakil explained. They reportedly used the proceeds to buy clothes, food, and a smartphone, which one of them later lost to theft.
The police managed to recover some of the stolen items, including 21 mobile phones, five MP4 players, a mobile phone charger, and a metal key used to access the store.
Wakil emphasized the command’s commitment to tackling criminal activities in Bauchi State. “The suspects will be transferred to a remand home for rehabilitation upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation,” he added.
