A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has led to the deaths of 94 people and left 50 others injured. The tragic event occurred late Tuesday night when a petrol tanker lost control and crashed, triggering a chain of events that culminated in a deadly explosion.
According to reports, the incident began around 11 p.m. when the tanker driver, identified as Yusuf Mohammad, lost control of the vehicle. The tanker, bearing the number plate KMC 6412 F, had departed from Kano and was en route to Nguru in Yobe State. When the tanker overturned, fuel began to spill into the surrounding area, drawing local residents who attempted to collect the fuel.
However, tragedy struck when the tanker suddenly exploded, causing a massive fire that claimed many lives. The explosion instantly killed 94 people and inflicted severe injuries on another 50, who were quickly transported to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for emergency treatment.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa State, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the details of the incident during a press briefing in Dutse on Wednesday. He said, “The residents were scooping fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion occurred, sparking a massive inferno that killed 94 people on the spot. The incident left another 50 people severely injured, who were then rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for treatment.”
Jigawa State’s Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, expressed deep condolences to the affected families and the entire community of Majia town. He urged residents to exercise caution and avoid approaching scenes of petrol tanker accidents, emphasizing the dangers involved. “The state’s commissioner of police, A.T. Abdullahi, condoles with the people of Majia town and Jigawa in general for the great loss. Avoid the scene of any petrol tanker accident as it always results in death by fire,” he cautioned.
The tragic incident has cast a pall over the community, with many mourning the loss of family members, friends, and neighbors. The local hospitals, including Ringim General Hospital, have been working tirelessly to provide medical care to the injured.
