Barcelona had high hopes for bringing Nico Williams to Camp Nou during the summer transfer window. The 21-year-old winger, fresh off a successful Euro 2024 campaign, was a priority target for the Catalan club. However, the deal ultimately fell through, and recent reports have shed light on why the move didn’t materialize.
According to a report by Alex Pintanel, Nico had agreed to join Barcelona as early as August. “Nico said ‘yes’ to Barça during a video conference,” Pintanel revealed. The meeting took place while Barcelona was in the United States for their pre-season preparations. The video conference included four key figures: Nico Williams, Barcelona president Joan Laporta, the club’s sporting director Deco, and Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta.
Before this virtual meeting, Deco had met with Nico’s agent in Zaragoza, where the two sides reportedly reached an agreement on contract details. At the time, Barcelona officials were confident that the deal would be finalized. Some within the club even assumed that Nico’s transfer was a done deal.

Despite the early progress, communication between Barcelona and Nico’s camp unexpectedly stalled. The report suggests that Barcelona’s slow pace in closing the deal may have caused the player to reconsider his options. As a result, the transfer never advanced beyond the initial agreement.
“Barcelona train passes only once,” a frustrated Joan Laporta reportedly told Nico when it became clear that the deal wouldn’t go through. The club’s leadership believed that a quicker approach might have secured the talented winger’s signature.
While the disappointment was palpable within the Barcelona camp, there could still be a silver lining. Reports indicate that Barcelona is considering making another attempt to sign Nico in the summer of 2025. The club remains hopeful that they can eventually bring the young star to Camp Nou and make up for the missed opportunity.
