The Super Eagles of Nigeria are stranded at Abraq International Airport in Libya, just days before their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya. The match, set for Tuesday, has been overshadowed by unexpected travel challenges that have left the Nigerian team in a difficult situation.
The Nigerian team departed Uyo on Sunday morning, aiming to reach Benghazi, where the match will take place at the Benina Stadium. However, according to sports journalist Tobi Adepoju, complications arose when the team’s chartered flight was suddenly diverted mid-air to Abraq International Airport, located much further from their intended destination.
“The agreement and approval the NFF obtained was for the chartered flight to land in Benghazi, but the plane was unexpectedly diverted to Abraq,” Adepoju explained in a social media post on Sunday night.
The diversion has created significant logistical challenges for the Super Eagles. While the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had arranged for transport to take the team from Benghazi’s airport to the stadium, there were no similar provisions made for their new location at Abraq. The Libyan Football Association did not provide buses at Abraq to facilitate the team’s journey, leaving them stranded.

Reports indicate that the team has been unable to leave the airport, as the gates were locked, preventing any movement from the premises. Videos circulating on social media, including one from NFF TV, show the Nigerian team seated in the waiting hall of Abraq Airport. In another clip, Nigerian officials can be seen speaking with airport authorities, seeking resolution for the closed gate.
This unexpected setback comes as Nigeria prepares for an important AFCON qualifier. The Super Eagles currently lead Group D with seven points, following their recent 1-0 victory against the same Libyan team in the reverse fixture in Uyo on Saturday. With less than 48 hours until the crucial rematch, the team’s current situation has caused concern among fans and sports analysts.
The delay threatens to impact the Super Eagles’ preparations for Tuesday’s game, which is critical for maintaining their top spot in the group. Despite the challenges, the team remains hopeful that arrangements will be made to reach Benghazi and continue their journey towards AFCON qualification.
