The Ogun State Police Command has begun a search for those responsible for the murder of Adeleke Adeyinka, a councillorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Adeyinka was a candidate for the councillorship seat of Ward 15 in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area, ahead of the upcoming local government elections set for November 16.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when suspected cultists attacked Adeyinka. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in an unmarked vehicle, shot the 40-year-old candidate at close range, and then used stones to crush his head until they were certain he had died.
The Police Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. Odutola disclosed that the police have already begun an investigation into the killing and are working to apprehend those involved. “We have commenced an investigation into the unfortunate incident, and efforts are in progress to arrest the fleeing suspects,” she stated.
Odutola also confirmed that the suspects are believed to be members of a cult group. “Preliminary findings suggest that the attack was carried out by suspected cultists,” she said. Following the investigation, the police have released Adeyinka’s remains to his family.
Adeyinka, who was well-known in the Panseke area of Abeokuta as a transport union worker, was described by his associates as a dedicated member of the community. His death has sent shockwaves through Abeokuta, leaving many in mourning and raising concerns about the safety of political candidates in the state.
The police have called on the public to come forward with any information that could assist in tracking down the perpetrators. “We urge members of the community to share any information they may have about the suspects’ whereabouts to aid in our investigation,” Odutola appealed.
This incident has added a layer of tension to the political atmosphere in Ogun State as the local government elections approach. Many residents are hopeful that the police will swiftly bring the killers to justice and ensure that such a tragedy does not repeat itself.
