The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that candidates who had their 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results withheld can start rechecking their results from Monday, October 14, 2024. This decision comes following the conclusion of the Nigeria Examinations Committee’s (NEC) 78th meeting, which ended on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
In a statement shared on its official social media account, WAEC urged affected candidates to revisit their examination results starting Monday.
“Candidates can recheck their results from Monday, October 14, 2024,” the post stated, while also noting that further details from the meeting would soon be shared with the public.
The meeting, which began on Monday, October 7, focused on issues surrounding malpractice and irregularities during the 2024 WASSCE. It also addressed ways to improve examination standards and policies to ensure the integrity of future exams. The meeting was crucial for discussing how to handle incidents of cheating and ensure that the results released reflect the true academic performance of candidates.
WAEC had previously announced the release of the WASSCE results two months ago, on August 12, 2024. However, the results of 215,267 candidates were withheld due to various reports of malpractice and other irregularities during the examination. The decision to withhold results affected a significant number of students, many of whom have been anxiously awaiting updates on when their results would be reviewed.
“The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat for the 2024 WASSCE for school candidates that the results have been officially released today, Monday, August 12, 2024,” WAEC had previously announced.
However, those affected by withheld results have been waiting for further instructions.

PUNCH Online reported that the NEC meeting not only reviewed cases of malpractice but also discussed policies aimed at strengthening the credibility of WAEC exams in Nigeria. The forthcoming communiqué from the meeting is expected to provide more clarity on the next steps for candidates with withheld results and outline any changes to examination policies.
WAEC’s decision to allow rechecking of withheld results offers some hope to affected candidates, parents, and schools, as they eagerly anticipate the resolution of these issues. In the meantime, students are encouraged to monitor WAEC’s official platforms for updates.
WAEC has also called on students, parents, and educators to remain patient and attentive to the forthcoming announcements that will provide further guidance. The council continues to take steps to address all concerns raised during the examination process and ensure fairness for all candidates.
