Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, has suggested he may be willing to serve as deputy to Peter Obi, his Labour Party counterpart in the last election. In a video that is currently circulating on X (formerly Twitter), Kwankwaso, who spoke in Hausa, said he would consider deputizing Obi “if certain conditions are met.”

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, highlighted his political experience and accomplishments, emphasizing that he believes he is more politically seasoned than Obi.

“I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically, I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder, I performed better than him when I was a governor of my state,” Kwankwaso stated.

Despite his confidence in his own leadership credentials, he stressed that he has no issue with taking the second position to Obi, but only under specific terms.

“I’ve no problem with deputizing Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met,” Kwankwaso reiterated.

He further expressed a willingness to engage in talks with Obi’s camp, emphasizing the importance of building mutual trust.

“We are willing to engage in discussions, provided that trust is established,” he said, leaving the door open for potential collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The possibility of a political alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi has sparked discussions in political circles, especially given the influence both leaders hold in their respective regions.

In the 2023 election, Peter Obi won a majority of votes in 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, securing third place with about 6.1 million votes. Kwankwaso, on the other hand, performed strongly in Kano State, winning 38 out of 44 local government areas and gathering 1.5 million votes.
