The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into the brutal beheading of a couple, Mr. Jacob Udo and his wife, Mrs. Comfort Udo, in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State. The couple, who were traders, were killed in their home in Etiti Ulo, Bende, on Tuesday night by unknown attackers.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, we received such a report yesterday at the Bende Divisional Headquarters. The crime scene has been visited, exhibits recovered, and the bodies have been deposited at the mortuary. Investigation is ongoing.”
The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community. According to sources, the Udos, originally from Itumbauzo in Bende, were attacked in their home. Unverified reports suggest that the murder may have been linked to a land dispute in their hometown. One source even alleged that Mrs. Comfort Udo was raped before being beheaded by the assailants, but this has not yet been confirmed by the authorities.
Reacting to the horrific crime, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, strongly condemned the killing. He described the murder as “horrific and senseless” and expressed deep sadness over the loss of the couple.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu said, “The late Udo and his wife, originally from Itumbauzo, were reportedly beheaded and their bodies dismembered by yet-to-be-identified assailants. This heinous act of violence is unacceptable and violates the fundamental human right to life.”
Kalu, who represents the Bende Federal Constituency, called the act “barbaric” and emphasized that no grievance could justify such brutality. He urged the community to remain calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands through reprisal attacks.
“My thoughts are with the victims’ families and their loved ones. I unequivocally condemn the brutal killing of the couple. This shocking act of violence contradicts humanity’s basic principles. I urge the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. We stand together against violence and extremism, advocating for a culture of tolerance, respect, and peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Kalu said.
