The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that it will no longer allow data modification at its National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment centers nationwide.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the Commission instructed all NIN holders who wish to update their personal information to use its self-service modification portal instead.
Although the self-service portal has been available for some time, many Nigerians continued visiting enrollment centers, enduring long queues and waiting periods to modify their data.
NIMC’s New Policy
In a post on its X handle, the NIMC explained that the policy change is part of its efforts to improve the National Identity Management System.
“Modification activities will no longer be conducted at our enrollment centers. Instead, we have launched a convenient self-service modification portal, empowering you to update your information securely and efficiently online,” the Commission said.
NIMC emphasized that the self-service portal offers several benefits, including convenience, security, and the ability to make updates from anywhere at any time.
“No more long queues and waiting periods. It enhances data security since it’s a secure online platform. It also increases efficiency, providing faster approvals,” NIMC added.
Challenges Faced by Users
However, some users have reported issues using the self-service portal. One common problem is difficulty receiving the One-Time Password (OTP) required to proceed with the modification. Others have complained about receiving rejection messages after making payments for modifications, without further options to complete the process.
The fees for making modifications on the platform are N16,340 for updating a date of birth, and N1,522 for changing a phone number, name, or address.
Steps for Using the NIMC Self-Service Portal
To modify your NIN data, follow these steps:
- Visit the NIMC self-service modification portal at (https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng).
- Verify your NIN and log in to the portal.
- From the dashboard, select the “NIN Modification” option to change your personal information.
- Make the required payment through Paystack.
- If modifying your date of birth, enter your National Population Commission (NPC) certificate number to validate it. The date of birth will auto-fill and cannot be edited. If you don’t have your birth certificate, you can complete an online birth attestation at (http://www.nationalpopulation.org.ng).
- Upload your NPC certificate and any required supporting documents.
- Review your modification request, check the attestation box, and submit it.
- A transaction slip will be generated instantly.
Once your modification is approved, you will receive a notification, and your updated NIN slip will be sent to your email. You can also print the slip directly from the portal dashboard.
