A suspected gunman was killed in a gunfight with police officers during a routine patrol in the Igbo Ukwu/Ezinifite Uga area of Anambra State on Sunday night. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that several arms and criminal items were recovered at the scene.
In a statement on Monday, the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the confrontation occurred around 11:30 p.m. when officers encountered armed men during a patrol. According to Ikenga, the armed suspects engaged the police in a gun battle but were overpowered, leading to the death of one gunman, while the others fled.
“On 29/9/2024, at about 11:30 p.m., the police-led security team, while patrolling within Aguata Local Government Area, received information about suspected armed men spotted in a black Prado Jeep along the Igbo Ukwu/Ezinifite Uga axis. The operatives approached the scene, engaged the armed men in a gun battle, and neutralized one of the miscreants while others escaped,” Ikenga explained.

He added that law enforcement recovered a variety of weapons and items used by the criminals during the operation. Among the items seized were two AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, loaded magazines, 15 live cartridges, and a black Prado Jeep with two different license plates. Additionally, two police body armoured vests, three face caps, a black handbag, and various criminal charms were found.
“The police recovered two AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, two magazines loaded with live ammunition, 15 live cartridges, one black Prado Jeep, two police body armoured vests, three face caps, a black handbag, and different types of criminal charms,” Ikenga said.
Ikenga also mentioned that police clearance operations were ongoing in the area to locate the fleeing suspects.
“Clearance operations are still ongoing, and further details shall be communicated,” he added.
