Dame Diana Johnson, the UK’s Minister of State for Policing, Fire, and Crime Prevention, had her purse stolen while attending a policing conference, according to a report by the BBC on Thursday. The theft occurred at the Police Superintendents’ Association conference held at the Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.
Ironically, the minister was addressing the conference on Tuesday about the increasing problems of antisocial behavior, theft, and shoplifting when the incident happened. This unexpected theft has raised eyebrows, especially given the context of her speech on crime prevention.
The Home Office confirmed that Dame Diana Johnson was indeed a victim of theft, and an investigation has been launched by Warwickshire Police. A spokesman from Warwickshire Police provided details, saying, “We’re investigating a report of the theft of a purse at a hotel on the B4115 in Kenilworth. The theft occurred some time between 11:00 and 13:15 on Tuesday.”
Authorities have already made progress in the case. A 56-year-old man from Coventry was arrested on suspicion of burglary in connection with the incident. He has since been released on bail as investigations continue. The spokesman added, “Enquiries are ongoing.”
Despite the theft, the Home Office has assured the public that no security risks were identified in connection with the incident. However, the theft has certainly highlighted the very issues that the conference was set to address.
