Sony announced on Tuesday that it will release an upgraded version of its flagship gaming console, the PlayStation 5 Pro, on November 7. The new console will feature enhanced graphics, improved artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, and faster performance, making it the most powerful PlayStation model to date.
Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead architect, introduced the PlayStation 5 Pro in a short video announcement, highlighting the console’s advanced features. “Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built and a worthy addition to the PS5 family,” Cerny stated. The PlayStation 5 Pro will retail for $700 in the United States and 800 euros in Europe, approximately 250 euros more than the current PlayStation 5.
The release of the PlayStation 5 Pro comes at a challenging time for Sony’s gaming division. Earlier this year, the company missed its sales targets for the PlayStation 5 and announced 900 job cuts in February. The broader gaming industry has also faced difficulties, with investment that surged during the COVID-19 pandemic now largely drying up.
Despite these challenges, Sony is confident that the PlayStation 5 Pro will make a significant impact in the market. The company has emphasized that the new console’s advanced hardware will allow games to run faster, with better light rendering and sharper images thanks to its AI system.
Analysts have weighed in on the upcoming release, with mixed expectations. Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, noted that Sony had previously attempted to boost sales of its PlayStation 4 by releasing a Pro version in 2016. However, the PlayStation 4 Pro had a limited impact, as it was seen as a premium product tailored for a niche audience. “What will really drive PS5 sales is a lower price on the base models (and games like GTA6),” Ahmad commented on X, formerly known as Twitter, referring to the anticipated release of “Grand Theft Auto 6.”
In its official statement, Sony announced that all PlayStation 5 games will be compatible with the PlayStation 5 Pro, with several titles available in enhanced versions. These include popular games like “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”
Hideaki Nishino, CEO of the Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed pride in the PlayStation 5’s impact on the gaming industry. “We are proud of the impact that PS5 has made on the gaming industry,” Nishino said. He added that the new console would allow game creators to “unleash the possibilities” of even more advanced hardware, enabling them to realize their visions and reach millions of players worldwide.
Sony’s announcement comes amid a turbulent period for its gaming division. Earlier this month, the company pulled the space-based shooter game “Concord” just two weeks after its release due to disappointing sales. The game had reportedly taken eight years to develop, making its failure particularly significant. However, Sony also enjoyed success with another title, “Astro Bot,” which is exclusive to the PlayStation console. The game received rave reviews, earning a score of 94 out of 100 on the review aggregation site Metacritic, placing it among the best-reviewed recent releases.
