Tesla has launched its first all-electric train, known as the “Giga Train,” in Germany. This groundbreaking transport service, unveiled on Friday, offers a free ride for all passengers, including both Tesla employees and the general public.

The Giga Train operates between Erkner Station and Tesla Sud, the station at Tesla’s manufacturing facility located about 20 miles southeast of Berlin. The train is currently capable of carrying 500 people, featuring 120 seats, dedicated space for bicycles, and a passenger information system, according to Teslarati.

Theresa Eggler, a Tesla project manager, expressed enthusiasm about the new electric train. “We are particularly pleased that the Tesla train shuttle is now battery-electric because it is simply in line with our company mission: to accelerate the transition to renewable energies,” Eggler told rbb24, a German media outlet.

The train is expected to play a crucial role in transporting 4,500 employees to and from the factory across three eight-hour shifts. Additionally, plans are in place to add another stop once construction in the area is completed.

Niederbarnimer Eisenbahngesellschaft (NEB), the company operating the train, also announced plans to convert its entire fleet from diesel to electric trains by the end of this year. This transition is part of a broader push to offer greener transportation options and reduce pollution.

Eggler highlighted the environmental benefits of the new train, noting it is projected to cut 50 tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional trains. “This is a major environmental win,” she said.

Tesla has been a leader in green innovations. The company has previously faced criticism for deforestation near Berlin while building the Gigafactory. In response, Tesla has committed to planting over 1 million trees in 2024 to offset environmental impact.

In addition to the Giga Train, Tesla has introduced a ride-share program in Tampa, Florida, offering affordable transport options at just $2 per ride.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are seen as a way to both save money and reduce environmental impact. Studies show that owning an EV can save drivers around $1,500 annually on gas and maintenance costs.
