A 38-year-old hunter, Joseph Ajegba, is now in police custody after admitting to shooting his friend upon finding him in bed with his girlfriend. The incident took place in Ikun-Akoko, a community in the Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Ajegba was paraded alongside other suspects at the Ondo State Police Command headquarters in Akure, where he confessed to the crime. According to Ajegba, the shocking encounter happened after he had dropped off some bushmeat for his girlfriend earlier in the day and later returned to her house, intending to spend the night there.
“I went out hunting after having some bottles of beer, but I ran out of cartridges. I decided to return to my girlfriend’s house to sleep there. When I arrived, I saw the door locked. I then went to the window, opened it, and saw a co-hunter having sex with my girlfriend. That was when I fired the gun in my hand,” Ajegba recounted.
The suspect’s actions have been described by the police as a case of attempted murder. The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Oladipo, provided further details during the parade.
“On the 23rd of August, 2024, at about 11:00 p.m., a case of attempted murder was reported to the police. The victim had gone to visit a woman, who is a divorcee, at her home. Ajegba Joseph, a hunter aged 38 years, who is also in a relationship with the woman, visited her on the same day, armed with an unlicensed single-barrel gun. Upon seeing the victim in bed with the woman, the suspect shot him through the window.”
The victim, who has not been named, survived the shooting but sustained injuries. The police are currently investigating the incident, and Ajegba faces charges related to attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
