The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has urged candidates and schools with withheld results from the May/June Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to check their status online. This step is crucial for those who lodged complaints to prove their innocence regarding allegations of exam malpractice.
According to WAEC, a total of 215,267 candidates, representing 11.92% of the 1,805,216 students who took the exam, have had their results withheld due to various reported cases of malpractice. The council is currently investigating these cases to determine whether the results will be released.
Candidates who believe they have been wrongfully accused were given the opportunity to lodge complaints through a dedicated portal. WAEC assured that those who successfully proved their innocence have had their results released. However, WAEC’s spokesperson, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, noted that some cases are still under investigation.
“Schools or candidates who complained to WAEC and provided evidence of their innocence have had their results released. However, those whose cases are still pending likely have strong evidence against them, requiring further investigation,” Mrs. Adesina told the Nigerian Tribune.
She advised those still awaiting their results to be patient, as further investigations are being conducted. These cases will be reviewed by the National Examination Committee, which is expected to meet by early October to finalize decisions regarding the withheld results.
Mrs. Adesina acknowledged the importance of timely results, especially for candidates who need them for ongoing university admissions. However, she emphasized that WAEC is committed to thoroughly investigating each case to ensure fairness.
“WAEC understands the importance of candidates’ results and the urgency for admissions. However, the council will not rush the investigation process, as each case must be carefully reviewed,” she said.
She reassured candidates that the wait would not be prolonged, stating, “The waiting time won’t be long as this kind of matter has a time frame.”
Candidates and schools are encouraged to check the council’s portal for updates on their results as investigations continue.
