FG Orders Top Defense Officials to Move to Sokoto Amid Rising Insecurity in North-West Nigeria

In response to the escalating insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region, the Federal Government has ordered key defense officials, including the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, and other military chiefs, to relocate to Sokoto State. This move is part of a broader strategy to address the persistent threats of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism that have plagued the region.

This directive was announced through a statement issued by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Ministry of Defence. The government’s decision underscores its commitment to restoring peace and security in the North-West, a region that has been severely impacted by violent criminal activities.

Dr. Matawalle emphasized the urgency of this mission, stating that their presence in the North-West would bolster military operations aimed at dismantling bandit networks, particularly the notorious gang led by Bello Turji. “These criminal bandits have been circulating videos of a Nigerian military armored vehicle that was stuck in a waterlogged area,” Matawalle said, referencing a recent incident in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area in Zamfara State, where bandits celebrated after Nigerian troops were forced to abandon a military vehicle.

“This is not acceptable as President Bola Tinubu has been giving great support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Matawalle continued. He highlighted the government’s deep concern over the ongoing violence, noting that the federal authorities are ready to deploy all necessary resources to eliminate these threats and restore peace to affected communities.

Matawalle’s presence in the North-West is intended to provide direct supervision of military operations and ensure a coordinated effort to flush out bandits from their strongholds. “The time is up for these bandits and terrorists as increased and consistent operations will weaken all their bases,” he declared, adding that his leadership on the ground would inspire the armed forces to intensify their efforts.

The minister also reassured residents of Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and other states in the North-West that the government remains committed to their safety and well-being. He urged locals to stay vigilant and cooperate with security forces as they work to protect lives and property. “The security and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority,” Matawalle affirmed.
