The Lagos State Police Command has declared a doctor, identified as Idara Bassey, wanted following the tragic death of a 36-year-old woman named Abiola during a buttock enlargement procedure at a clinic in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos.
The procedure, commonly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), ended in disaster when Abiola lost her life after being injected by a nurse on the doctor’s orders.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that the owner of the clinic, Dr. Bassey, is currently on the run and has been officially declared a suspect.
Hundeyin said, “The clinic’s owner is on the run. Of course, she’s a suspect.”
The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday when Abiola left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in Ibeju Lekki, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.
According to the driver, after the nurse administered the injection as directed by Dr. Bassey, Abiola suddenly lost consciousness and began gasping for breath.
The nurse involved in the procedure has since been arrested, but authorities are still searching for Dr. Bassey, who fled the scene after the incident.
The Brazilian Butt Lift is a popular cosmetic surgery that involves extracting fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to create a fuller, more rounded appearance.
Despite its popularity, the procedure carries significant risks, which medical experts have repeatedly warned about. However, the demand for such procedures remains high, particularly in Lagos, where many women seek to enhance their physical appearance.
This tragic incident is not isolated. In 2019, a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, died during a similar surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul. A coroner later reported that Kerr had not been given adequate information to assess the risks of the BBL surgery before traveling for the procedure.
The Lagos State Police are continuing their investigation into Abiola’s death and are urging anyone with information on Dr. Bassey’s whereabouts to come forward. As the search for the doctor continues, this case serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers associated with cosmetic surgeries, particularly when they are not performed under proper medical supervision.
