Nollywood veteran Yemi Solade has raised concerns over the future of honorary degrees awarded to Nigerian celebrities following the Federal Government’s crackdown on fake certificates obtained from foreign universities. Solade expressed his thoughts on Instagram, questioning what will happen to these honorary titles now that degrees from certain institutions in Benin Republic, Togo, and other countries have been declared invalid.
In his post, Solade wrote, “What Happens To ALL The ABSURD Doctorate Degrees Splashed On Nigerian Celebs Since FG Has Pronounced That Degrees Acquired From Benin Republic Since 2017 Are INVALID?” His post sparked a lively discussion among his followers, with many supporting his viewpoint. One follower commented, “Valid question… But the answer is so clear… Never to be used.” Another added, “Waste of money on frivolous degrees.”
Solade’s remarks come in response to the Federal Government’s recent announcement that over 21,600 graduates are using fake certificates from degree mills in Benin Republic, Togo, and other neighboring countries. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed this during a press briefing on August 23, 2024, where he highlighted the government’s efforts to clean up the system.
Prof. Mamman emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “The federal government has directed that the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) issue a circular to flush out anybody with fake certificates from these institutions.” He further clarified that in Togo, only three universities are officially approved and licensed to offer degree courses, while in Benin Republic, there are five such institutions.
The crackdown is part of a broader effort by the government to address the proliferation of fake degrees and ensure the integrity of the Nigerian education system. As the government intensifies its efforts, many are now questioning the legitimacy of the honorary degrees and titles that have been widely accepted and celebrated within the entertainment industry.
The situation has brought to light the need for more stringent regulations and verification processes for degrees and honorary titles, particularly those obtained from foreign institutions. For now, the future of these “absurd” doctorates remains uncertain, leaving many in the entertainment industry to reconsider the value of these accolades in light of the government’s stance on fake certificates.
