The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 97 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, following a violent clash in Abuja that left two policemen dead and three others seriously injured. The confrontation occurred on Sunday and led to the destruction of three police patrol vehicles, which were set ablaze by the group.
In a statement released on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests and stated that the detained suspects would be prosecuted. Adejobi credited credible intelligence reports for aiding police operatives in apprehending those involved in the incident.
“The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has given clear directives on this matter, and these will be carried out to the letter,” Adejobi said, emphasizing the force’s commitment to bringing all those responsible for the attack to justice.
The Inspector-General also expressed his determination to resist any form of anarchy and unrest across the country. He pledged that the police would continue to maintain law and order, even in the face of extremist threats.
The I-G was quoted as saying, “The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable. Those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace.”
Adejobi further stated that the Nigeria Police Force is determined to uncover the full extent of the attack as investigations continue and to prevent future occurrences of such violence against law enforcement officers.
In his statement, the Inspector-General extended his sympathies to the families of the fallen officers and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured and are currently undergoing treatment. He also called on the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain peace and order.
“We urge the public to understand and support the Nigeria Police Force as we work to maintain law and order, even in the face of extremist threats and other violent crimes,” Adejobi concluded.
