TikTok Launches Group Chat Feature to Compete with Messaging Apps

TikTok is expanding its platform to include a new group chat feature, challenging established messaging services like Meta’s WhatsApp and Apple’s Messages.

Announced on Monday, the update allows users to create group chats with up to 32 people, providing a new way to interact and share content directly within TikTok.

Previously, users had to rely on external messaging apps to share TikTok videos with friends. Now, TikTok users can watch, comment, and react to videos together in real-time within the app. This move reflects TikTok’s intention to enhance its platform as a social space where friends can connect, rather than just a place to view content from strangers.

The group chat feature is available only to users aged 15 and above. TikTok has implemented several safety measures to protect younger users. For instance, teens aged 16 and 17 can only be added to group chats by mutual followers. If a teen receives an invite, they must have at least one mutual friend in the group to join. Additionally, when a teen creates a group chat, they must review and approve any new members.

To start a group chat, users can tap the “Chat” button at the top of their inbox, select “More options,” choose the friends they want to add, and click “Start group chat.” To join an existing group chat, users can simply tap on the invite and select “Join group.”

In addition to the group chat feature, TikTok is rolling out custom stickers for direct messages. This new option allows users to create and upload their own stickers, adding a personal touch to their conversations. The company has also introduced a stickers management platform where users can track how often their stickers are used on the app.

TikTok has emphasized its commitment to safety with these updates. The group chat feature will only be accessible to users with at least one mutual friend in the chat, and the stickers feature is limited to users aged 16 and older. These measures are designed to enhance user experience while protecting younger audiences.

As TikTok primarily serves as a platform for short-form video content, the new group chat feature might take time to gain traction among users. However, the addition of custom stickers and the ability to manage sticker usage could provide a unique and engaging experience that sets TikTok apart from other messaging platforms.

In conclusion, TikTok’s latest update aims to make the platform a more interactive and social space, expanding its functionality beyond video consumption to include dynamic conversations and personalized messaging options.
