On Thursday, angry protesters in Daura, Katsina State, besieged the residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari, demanding that he address the ongoing economic difficulties in Nigeria. These hardships have been exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.
An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, told Channels Television on Saturday that the protesters blocked the main road leading to Mai-adua-Kwangwalam and Daura, as well as the T-junction leading to Buhari’s house. “The protesters were in large numbers, chanting ‘Bamayi’ meaning ‘We are not in support’ and ‘Adalci Mukeso’ meaning ‘We need justice,'” the eyewitness said. The protesters also burned tyres to express their frustration.
The demonstrators eventually handed over a letter outlining their grievances to one of Buhari’s aides for delivery to the former president. The eyewitness described the scene, saying, “The youths were very determined and made sure their message was conveyed.”

During the protest, there was a heavy security presence around Buhari’s residence. The situation prompted the Katsina State Government to impose a curfew across the 34 Local Government Areas to maintain law and order.
The protesters’ actions highlight the deep dissatisfaction among many Nigerians with the current economic situation. The removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have led to increased prices and financial strain for ordinary citizens.
As of now, former President Buhari has not made any public statement regarding the protesters’ demands. The protest in Daura is part of a larger wave of discontent sweeping across Nigeria as citizens call for immediate action to alleviate their economic woes.
