President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, regarding the ongoing protests across Nigeria. In his speech, he expressed deep sorrow over the violence and destruction that have marked the demonstrations.

“Today, I speak to you with a heavy heart,” President Tinubu began. He acknowledged the demands of young Nigerians who are calling for a better future, and he expressed regret over the recent loss of lives and damage to public properties in states such as Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna. “The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation,” he said, highlighting the additional burden on resources needed for recovery.

The President extended his condolences to the families of those who have died and urged for an end to violence. He emphasized the need for dialogue, urging protesters and organizers to suspend further demonstrations and engage in discussions. “Nigeria requires all hands on deck,” he said, calling for unity and collaboration across all divides.

Tinubu also warned against those exploiting the protests for divisive purposes, stating that “the law will catch up with you.” He stressed that there is no room for ethnic bigotry in the Nigeria he envisions.

Regarding the economic situation, President Tinubu outlined the challenges faced by the country. He acknowledged the deep economic issues that have plagued Nigeria and defended his government’s controversial decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the abolition of multiple foreign exchange systems. “These actions were necessary to reverse decades of economic mismanagement,” he explained. He admitted that while these decisions were painful, they were crucial for long-term economic health.

The President reported that government revenues have significantly increased, reaching over 9.1 trillion Naira in the first half of 2024, more than double the previous year. This increase is attributed to efforts to block financial leakages and introduce automation.

President Tinubu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to transparent and accountable governance. “My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation,” he said, emphasizing the government’s dedication to providing good governance and addressing the economic challenges facing Nigeria.
