Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, putting an end to speculation about his support.
In a joint statement with former First Lady Michelle Obama, they expressed their strong backing for Harris, emphasizing her qualifications and leadership qualities.
“Kamala has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands,” the Obamas stated. They highlighted her experience as California’s attorney general, a US senator, and vice-president, noting that she has more than just a resume. “There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people.”
The endorsement comes as Harris has already secured the support of a majority of Democratic delegates, making her the likely official nominee at the party convention in August.

The Obamas also released a video showing Harris receiving their endorsement via phone call. “Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me,” Harris responded emotionally.
The former president and first lady pledged to do “everything we can” to help elect Harris, aligning themselves with President Biden’s previous praise for her. “We agree with President Biden. Choosing Kamala was one of the best decisions he’s made,” they said, underscoring her capability to lead in these challenging times.
This endorsement marks a significant moment in Harris’s campaign, reinforcing her position as a strong candidate for the Democratic Party in the upcoming election.
