President Bola Tinubu has praised the Supreme Court’s decision granting financial autonomy to local governments, emphasizing that this will enable Nigerians, particularly the poor, to hold their local leaders accountable.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for state governors to withhold funds meant for local governments.
The court also barred governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, stating that such actions violate the 1999 Constitution. President Tinubu highlighted the significance of this ruling in enhancing local governance.
“By virtue of this judgement, our people – especially the poor – will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions,” Tinubu said, according to his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale. “What is sent to local government accounts will be known, and services must now be provided without excuses.”
