Students at Lagos State University (LASU) held a peaceful protest on Monday against the introduction of new fees by the university. The students were upset about the addition of a N10,000 Computer Based Test (CBT), forensic, and counseling fee.
Student Union Leader Mr. Dolapo Tobun led the protest. He said the students only discovered the new fee on their school portal and were not informed about it in advance.
“This particular protest was necessary,” Tobun said. “I led the peaceful protest because we wanted the management to address the issue today and explain the reason for the additional fee.”
The students carried signs with messages like “Say No To 10k CBT Fee” and “Say No To Extortion,” expressing their frustration with the new charges.

Following the protest, Tobun and other union leaders met with the school management. The university agreed to remove the additional fee as a result of the discussion.
Mr. Samuel Kappo, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Students’ Union Affairs, spoke about the outcome of the protest. “After engaging with the students’ union and university management, the mandatory fee has been removed,” Kappo said. He praised the students for their peaceful demonstration and the management for their decision to withdraw the fee.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, confirmed the removal of the fee. “After meeting with the students, we decided to withdraw the fee,” she said.
The protest and subsequent meeting led to the reversal of the new fee, and students have been urged to return to their classes and continue their studies.
This protest highlights the active role students play in advocating for their rights and the responsiveness of the university administration to student concerns.
