President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has voluntarily reduced his own salary by 40% in a move he describes as a step towards responsible governance and nation-building. Boakai made this announcement on Saturday through a statement on Liberia’s government website.

Boakai explained that his decision to cut his salary is part of his commitment to fiscal responsibility and national financial security. “In fulfillment of his commitment to fiscal integrity and national financial security, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has announced a voluntary 40% reduction in his salary,” the statement said.

The President stated that this salary cut reflects his determination to set an example for other leaders and to strengthen government accountability. “This move is aimed at setting a precedent for responsible governance and nation-building,” Boakai said in the statement.

The salary reduction comes shortly after a protest by Liberian lawmakers who arrived at the parliament in tricycles, known as ‘Keke,’ to demonstrate against the non-payment of funds for their official vehicles by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

Boakai also pledged to work on improving public sector wages and ensuring fair compensation for government workers. “I am committed to empowering the Civil Service Agency (CSA) to ensure that public servants’ salaries are in line with the current state of the nation and that workers receive fair compensation for their contributions to the country,” he added.
