Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, stated on Wednesday that he has no interest in becoming the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election. This announcement was made through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah.
Alabrah revealed that a group called “Diri Angels” suggested that Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, should consider Diri as his running mate for 2027. Atiku lost the 2023 election to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
Diri firmly rejected the suggestion, describing it as a “Greek gift from political jobbers.” He urged people to disregard the proposal, calling the group faceless and non-existent. “The aim of those behind this act is to cause disaffection, but the plot is dead on arrival as I’m not interested in such a Greek gift,” he stated.

Diri emphasized his focus on delivering the promises made to the people of Bayelsa State. He mentioned that he relies on divine guidance in his political career and remains committed to the mandate given to him by Bayelsans. “I remain committed to the mandate given to me by the Bayelsa people and I’m single-mindedly focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to them,” Diri added.
He also cautioned Bayelsans not to be distracted by political tactics aimed at creating confusion. “I am not swayed by such calls. In my political journey, I have always relied on God and not on political jobbers with devious intentions,” Diri concluded.
Diri began his second term as governor on February 14, 2024, and reaffirmed his dedication to serving the people based on their mandate first given in 2019 and reaffirmed in November 2023.
