The Nigerian Federal Government has banned single-use plastics and Styrofoam packs in all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This decision aims to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability.
Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, announced the ban after a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. He highlighted the government’s commitment to tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to addressing the triple threat of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution,” Salako said.

Single-use plastics include items like plastic bottles, Styrofoam containers, straws, and plastic bread bag tags, which are used once and then discarded. Salako pointed out that plastic pollution is a major issue in Nigeria and needs immediate action.
The ban is a proactive step to combat plastic pollution nationwide and encourage sustainable practices within government operations. Salako added that this move aligns with global efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment for future generations.
The government plans to enforce the ban strictly to ensure all agencies comply, reflecting a strong commitment to fostering a cleaner and greener environment by reducing harmful plastic waste.
