The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued an alert regarding planned protests scheduled to take place in various parts of the country on June 12, 2024, coinciding with the Democracy Day Celebration.
In a statement released by Peter Afunanya, Director of PR & Strategic Communications, the DSS expressed concerns over the intentions behind these protests and warned against any actions that could jeopardize public safety and national security.
“While citizens have the rights of assembly and expression, such freedoms should not be used to undermine public safety,” stated Afunanya. The DSS emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and preventing any attempts to incite violence or create disorder during the planned demonstrations.
The statement urged citizens to exercise restraint and refrain from participating in any activities that could lead to a breakdown of law and order. Instead, individuals were encouraged to address their grievances through appropriate channels and procedures.
“We reaffirm our unequivocal position to protect the country from inimical acts orchestrated by disgruntled groups,” the DSS declared, emphasizing its collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property across the nation.
As Nigeria celebrates 25 years of unbroken democracy, the DSS called for continued patriotism, unity, and commitment to building a better nation. It reassured the public of its readiness to address any security concerns and provided contact information for individuals needing to reach out to the agency.
The DSS statement serves as a reminder of the government’s stance on maintaining law and order while upholding democratic principles, particularly during significant national events like Democracy Day celebrations.
