The national flag of Germany
The Government of Germany has introduced a new initiative, the “Opportunity Card,” designed to attract skilled workers from outside the European Union (EU), including Nigeria.
This initiative, announced on Germany’s Federal Foreign Office Consular Services Portal, provides a pathway for skilled individuals to seek employment opportunities in Germany.
The Opportunity Card serves as a residence permit, allowing workers from third countries—nations outside the EU—to enter Germany and search for jobs. The portal specifically includes Nigeria as one of the countries of residence for potential applicants.
The Opportunity Card is valid for up to one year, during which time individuals can look for qualified employment. If employment is found within this period, the worker can then obtain a follow-up Opportunity Card or a residence permit for gainful employment from the local foreigners’ authority in Germany.
To apply for the Opportunity Card, applicants must provide proof that their professional qualifications are recognized by the state, either in Germany or the country where the qualifications were obtained. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate their ability to support themselves financially during their stay in Germany. This proof can be provided through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment, requiring at least 1,027 euros per month as of 2024.
“Proof that you will be able to support yourself for the duration of your stay in Germany can be provided in the form of a blocked account or a declaration of commitment, for example,” the announcement stated. “At least 1,027 euros per month are generally required.”
During the job search period, cardholders are allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours a week and can take up trial jobs for up to two weeks to familiarize themselves with potential employment opportunities.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for the Opportunity Card must meet several basic requirements on a points basis, including:
- Completion of a degree or at least two years of state-recognized training.
- German language skills at a minimum level of A1 or English language skills at a minimum level of B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Sufficient financial means to cover living expenses for the duration of the stay in Germany.
For Nigerian applicants, the German government has provided specific guidance on the visa application process. Applicants must follow the procedures outlined by Germany’s diplomatic mission in Nigeria. This includes applying for a visa at the German mission responsible for their district of residence. If online applications are unavailable, applicants must apply on-site at their local German mission.
“You can only apply for your visa at the German mission responsible for you. The responsibility depends on the district in which you reside,” the announcement advised. “If the online application is not available at your competent German mission, please apply for your visa on-site. You will find further information on the website of your German mission.”
Germany’s call for skilled workers is part of a broader trend among foreign countries seeking expertise globally. There has been a notable increase in Nigerian healthcare workers migrating to the UK, Canada, and the US, driven by better opportunities and working conditions abroad.
This latest initiative by Germany aims to tap into the skilled workforce of Nigeria and other third countries, offering a structured and supportive pathway for skilled professionals to contribute to Germany’s economy while benefiting from new employment opportunities.
