The National Examinations Council (NECO) Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, announced that prominent UK universities, including Lead University and Birmingham City University, are considering NECO results for the admission of Nigerian students.
This development emohasizes the growing credibility and international acceptance of NECO examinations.
During an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Prof. Wushishi highlighted that Birmingham City University has already received the necessary information regarding NECO examinations. Efforts are ongoing to provide similar details to Lead University.
“This indicates a significant level of credibility and acceptance of NECO’s outcomes by international institutions,” Wushishi stated.
He emphasized that such recognition from foreign universities could open new educational opportunities for Nigerian students.
Addressing the topic of digitalization and potential migration to Computer-Based Testing (CBT), Prof. Wushishi acknowledged the challenges posed by the complexity of NECO exams. With approximately 1.5 million students taking exams in 76 different subjects and over 150 different papers annually, transitioning to CBT is not straightforward.
“Unlike other examination bodies like JAMB that primarily use multiple-choice formats, NECO’s comprehensive exam structure makes an immediate shift to CBT more complex,” Wushishi explained.
The move by UK universities to consider NECO results marks a significant milestone for the council and highlights the importance of maintaining high standards and credibility in national examinations.
