In a dramatic turn of events, two Catholic reverend sisters, Angela Onyenachi Ibe, 42, and Jacinta Yvonne Chiemelie, 41, found themselves on the wrong side of the law as they were remanded by the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State.
The reverend sisters were arraigned on Monday on a four-count charge including conspiracy, obtaining by false pretense, illegal dealings on children, and fraudulent adoption. Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, a media aide to the State Commissioner of Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday.
During the hearing, the defendants, hailing from Imo State and belonging to the Catholic Congregation known as the Saint Francis of Compassion, asserted their innocence. They disclosed their roles as staff members at the Sam Damian Community Children’s and Old People’s Home in Obosi, Anambra State.
Despite their plea of not guilty, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Genevieve Osakwe, declined their bail application, citing its weakness and lack of legal grounds. Consequently, the defendants were remanded at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka.
Expressing concern over the surge in illegal adoption cases, Chief Magistrate Osakwe urged the police to intensify efforts in apprehending and prosecuting individuals involved in managing illegal community children’s and old people’s homes across the state.
“This case underscores the need for stricter enforcement of child protection laws,” remarked Chief Magistrate Osakwe. “We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the welfare of vulnerable children.”
The case is adjourned to 29 May and 26 June 2024 for further hearing.
